Hope 4 Kids

"Hope 4 Kids has touched my heart because it helps families stay together in a home. We may not be able to eliminate homelessness completely as we cannot help everyone in need, but we can potentially contribute to the solution, and make a significant impact in the life of a child at the same time."
- Cheryl Millham, 2010-2011 First Lady

The Hope 4 Kids program was established to make it possible for Kiwanians to provide aid to children and families who are living in shelters and who are, or who are about to become, homeless.

Why Homelessness?
Homelessness is no longer a problem; it is an epidemic. According to STANDUP FOR KIDS, a national nonprofit serving homeless children in America, there are currently an estimated 1.3 million homeless and street kids in America. And according to the National Center on Family Homelessness, almost half (650,000) of the children in homeless families are under 6 years of age. Children who are raised in a homeless situation are three times more likely to be placed in remedial education programs, and four times more likely to drop out of school. If this happens, chances are they will continue the cycle of poverty and homelessness when they grow up.

The far-reaching consequences are astounding. This is a problem that involves each and every one of us and together with your help, the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation is working to make a difference.

As a Kiwanian, You Can:

  • Recognize a family or child in need and report it to your club so they can apply for a Hope 4 Kids grant;
  • Become a Champion for Children;
  • Make a donation to the Foundation's Pediatric Trauma Program;
  • Designate a portion of your William A. Dunlap Fellowship contribution to the Pediatric Trauma Program.

As a Club, You Can:

  • Host a fundraiser for a family in need;
  • Have a program at your meeting or DCM to spread the word;
  • Provide support to a family in need;
  • Make a donation to the Foundation's Pediatric Trauma Program;

Together we can reduce the number of young children exposed to the devastating and long-term effects of homelessness. By working to identify families in your communities who can benefit from the Hope 4 Kids program, you put service into action. And by supporting the Foundation’s Pediatric Trauma Program, you transform a passion for children into opportunities for a better tomorrow.

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.
