Building Safer Futures for Keiki

The Kiwanis Club of East Hawaiʻi recently brought the community together for a fun and educational Keiki (Child) Safety Day, creating a space where families could explore resources focused on health, wellness, and injury prevention.

The event welcomed approximately 100 community members and featured 16 partner organizations, all working collaboratively to share valuable information and hands-on activities designed to keep children safe. From interactive booths to engaging demonstrations, families had the opportunity to learn about safe physical activity, community resources, and ways to prevent pediatric trauma.

A highlight of the day was the bicycle safety course led by People for Active Transportation Hawaiʻi (PATH). Traveling from across the island, PATH volunteers created an engaging experience where keiki and adults could ride through a safety course, learn the rules of the road, and practice basic bicycle maintenance. Thanks in part to support from the Cal-Nev-Ha Children’s Fund, 40 children were fitted with and received brand-new helmets—each a simple but meaningful step toward preventing serious injury. An additional 30 helmets were provided to PATH to continue supporting their safety efforts beyond the event.

The day also featured opportunities for keiki to build confidence through safe physical activity, including experiences like supervised climbing, while parents connected with organizations offering ongoing support and intervention services.

This impactful event was made possible through the combined efforts of 12 Kiwanians, 30 Key Club members, and more than 30 volunteers from partner organizations. Together, they created a meaningful day centered on education, prevention, and community connection.

The Cal-Nev-Ha Children’s Fund is proud to have played a small role in supporting this initiative, helping extend the reach of safety education and resources to children and families in East Hawaiʻi.
