According to the National Traffic Safety Board, 426,000 children were injured in bicycle collisions in 2019. With this sobering statistic in mind, and knowing more children had been cycling in recent months due to the pandemic, the Kiwanis Club of Palmdale – with the help of a grant from the Cal-Nev-Ha Children’s Fund – hosted a bike helmet give-away for Kiwanis One Day.
Members purchased discounted bike helmets (from the CNH Children’s Fund!) and placed Kiwanis stickers on each helmet.
They then set up at a drive-thru distribution event at a local school where each child that attended the drive-thru giveaway received a free helmet.
Originally the club planned to purchase the bike helmets from local stores and had budgeted to purchase 100 helmets; however, they instead purchased the helmets through the CNH Children’s Fund, thereby secure a discount price on each helmet. This move allowed the club to purchase an additional twenty helmets!
In addition to keeping 120 children safe from injury with a new helmet, this Kiwanis One Day project resulted in a potential new member for the club. Way to go Palmdale Kiwanis!
