I am now entering my third year at UCSD, pursuing a B.S. in Neurobiology. This past year, I became a volunteer researcher at the Jack Bui lab on campus. I study IL-17D, a cytokine in the family of IL-17 cytokines that has not been extensively studied. Cytokines control the activity of immune cells in the body, so we hope to better understand its role in viral and bacterial infections, allergy, and autoimmunity.
I have also been participating in Palomar Health’s Pathmaker Internship, through which I have accumulated 48 volunteer hours thus far.
Volunteering in both the Med/Surg/Tele unit and the Neurological Progressive unit has provided me with invaluable insights into the significance of teamwork within a hospital setting. It has also deepened my appreciation for every individual who plays a pivotal role in enhancing the patient care experience. I am excited to gain more experience at UCSD and develop myself professionally as I prepare to apply for medical school.
I have always been profoundly grateful for the scholarship assistance, and I am especially appreciative as this marks my third consecutive year of receiving it. This financial support has afforded me the privilege of dedicating more time to pursuing the opportunities I genuinely enjoy, rather than being burdened by the stress of having to work to cover my expenses.
